Chou Ching-Hui's Wild Aspirations—The Yellow Sheep River Project addresses the relationship between technology and dreams through photography. His photographic subject is a group of children from the Yellow Sheep River in Gansu Province and the children's technological dream and imagination. The photographer transferred the children's drawings about their imagination of technology onto the local earthen walls. Through the comparison and contrast between the earthen walls that symbolized "decay" and the children that represented "hope," the project discussed the vivid disparity between reality and dream as well as the relationship between people and their dreams. The work is consisted of various sub-series, including the stage-photography of local children, called "Children's Portraits," "Children and Drawings on the Earthen Walls," "Child's Body, Old People's Behavior," and "Life and Environment." Through his intervention, Chou combines the people, place, and social landscape and creates a self-constructed photographic site. The seemingly simple images show surrealistic colors and figures. With rich, diversified meta-dramatic elements, Chou is able to give a concrete face to the abstract and intangible imagination, and fabricates his unique photographic style through integrating documentary and contemporary photography.

The photograph, III-20, in the exhibition is the last piece in the sub-series, "Child's Body, Old People's Behavior," and also the only portrait of a non-standing figure. The photographer employs the posture of females reclining on beds or divans often seen in Western classical paintings, and stages a little girl in this posture for photography. With the little girl's innocent and unadorned face, Chou creates a sense of classical elegance with an intriguing quality in the tranquil atmosphere.

Born in 1965, Chou graduated from Shih Hsin School of Journalism (now Shih Hsin University). After his graduation, he began working in the media and started several time-consuming feature photography projects, including: Out of the Shadows, Vanishing Leagues: Images of Workers, and Wild Aspirations: The Yellow Sheep River Project. His early photographic works falls mostly the category of photojournalism, convey his views and ideas about the subject through a documentary and poetic photographic style. In Animal Farm, he adopts the approach of fabricated photography for the first time. Through delicately exquisite yet colorfully saturated images, he conjures up a surrealistic atmosphere, developing his own photographic language. Chou's work stems from social realities and incorporates artistic methods and the concept of social theatre. He believes that his approach of "creative photography" represents and interprets those life stories that people are familiar with. Chou has won the Independence Post Group Annual Taiwan News Award, a silver medal in Reportage Category of the ROC International Photography Art Exhibition, a gold medal of Taipei Photography Festival Reportage Photography Award, and the Golden Tripod Awards for Publications, and has been repeatedly invited to prestigious international photography exhibitions. These include Sightings: Searching for the Truth – 2009 Guangzhou Photo Biennial Exhibition, Four Dimensions – Contemporary Photography from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Macau, The First Yangtze International Photography & Video Biennale, the 2014 Taipei Biennale, and Unfamiliar Asia—The Second Beijing Photo Biennale.
